I don’t know, the volcano theory sounds pretty relevant to me . . . I know if I’m not extremely diligent when I clean my desk, I can’t find things for days! Not sure my desk is “volcano” bad, though, but it is often pretty full of stuff that I’m at least working on.

]]>I did once hear about the “volcano theory” which effectively advocated an untidy desk. When it’s tidy you can’t find anything. But with a “volcano” on your desk, the stuff you need is pretty much at the bottom of the volcano and in reach.
Probably a load of nonsense. But the chance to be a genius, and the tenuous volcano theory is good enough for me to just leave it that way.
]]>I appreciate your kind thoughts.
And I get what you mean about 5:12, err, I mean early morning.
For me it’s late in the evening when I do my “best” work. Mostly because then I have fewer interruptions from the kiddos.
I like that quote . . . it makes a lot of sense. And yes, I get in these phases of super organization and then suddenly it’s chaos. But I try anyway. Who was it that said something about a cluttered desk is the sign of a genius?
So, thanks for stopping by. Come again soon.

]]>This is a great read. And I love the design of the blog and article.
I do enjoy reading and agree it helps you structure what you say more naturally.
It’s 5:12AM and that tends to be the most creative time I have. Not 5:12 exactly. that would be silly. I mean early morning. then again, what about a series of 5:12AM posts? It’s different, but maybe not that creative!
Which is why another of your tips is excellent - don’t edit on the fly. I got a quote from a book I read - someone who was quoting someone else:
“Write with fury, correct with care”
I aspire to the other two tips - an orderly workspace and scheduling stuff. I’ve tried all sorts of things to overcome this but can’t!
But I’m not sure it’s a handicap. While part of what I do for a living is writing, mostly it isn’t. Writing for me is fun. And I like the freedom of just writing what I feel.
I can go through phases of organisation, but can’t stay consistent - and believe me I’ve tried!
This is a great blog and I couldn’t help stumbling this article! Keep up the great work!
