My top 5 tips for writing

Hey! I'm so glad you're here! Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee or whatever you prefer and make yourself comfortable. I hope you enjoy your visit. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for stopping by!

1. Get organized. Know what you want to say before you say it. Whether you’re writing for the web or another medium, it’s essential. Simply jot down the important points to keep you focused. It also helps your writing flow well from beginning to end. Organize your points in the order you want to make them. Doing so helps keep your writing process simple and effortless.

2. Keep paragraphs short. Information presented in short junks is easier for our brains to understand. Keep paragraphs short to help the reader get the most out of the material. Paragraphs can even be only a few sentences long. And sometimes they are only a word or two.

3. Keep sentences short. Like short paragraphs, short sentences are easier to read and understand. Each sentence should be one thought. Sentences with more than one thought can lead to confusion.

4. Use simple words. Communication is the key to writing. Remember to use words your readers are likely to use regularly themselves. In other words, don’t say “utilize” when a simple “use” will do.

5. Write like you speak. Unless you’re writing for a formal situation, keep it conversational. There’s no reason to muddle up the message with formal language.

By following these 5 simple tips, you will be on your way to writing success.

I’ll be writing a 2nd post with 5 more tips soon. In the meantime, if you have questions or thoughts, leave me a comment here.
